Канатный трамвай — Elevador da Graça (1893 — 1909)

Elevador de São Graça

Designed by Raoul Mesnier, who can be considered the father of Lisbons funiculars and cable cars, the Elevador da Graça was similar to the cable car systems used in Elevador da Estrela and Elevador de São Sebastião. All used a cable embeded in the public road between 900mm gauge tracks.

The construction began in 1889 and the system was inaugurated on 27th February 1893. It was operated by Nova Companhia dos Ascensores Mecânicos de Lisboa (NCAML), who already operated all the other funicular and cable cars (except for Elevador de São Sebastião).

The route connected Rua da Palma as the lower terminus (currently located at the northern tip of Praça Martim Moniz) to Largo da Graça at the top. On the total length of 730 meters the cars overcame an elevation increase of 75 meters.

Almost no documentation of the rolling stock has survived, but it is assumed, that there were around 4 cars, all made by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen. They were double sidded with manual brakes and petroleum lights.

The steam engine propelling the endless cable were built by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen and located in a building on Largo da Graça which also was used as a depot (unknown exactly which one).

In 1909 the line was closed and, following NCAML aquisition by Carris from 1913, partially absorbed by Carris in 1915, with a slight change in the route. Unlike the cable cars which after passing the Arco de Santo André (demolished in 1913) took Calçada da Graça and reached the southern point of Largo da Graça, the trams continued straight to Rua de São Tomé.

The fate of the cars and equipment after the aquisition by Carris is unknown, bust most likely, all were scrapped.

Calçada do Graça

Unknown cable car is about pass through Arco de Santo André (built in 1373, demolished in 1913).
In 2024, the cable car would be turning from Calçada de Santo André and turning onto Calçada da Graça. Tram route 12E follows the route of Elevador da Graça from Rua da Palma up to this point. When Carris took over this route (in 1913) the route along Calçada da Graça was abandoned and a new route was to São Tomé. Modern route would go to the left in this photo. The exact passage did not exist when the photo was taken, as it was created by demolishing Arco de Santo André.

The tower (possibly doorway 93) and all the buildings on the left side still exist in 2024. Modern tram line 28 is located in front of the background building visible on the right side.

In 2024 tram route 28 (and 12 towards Martim Moniz) also go past the same location, but the tracks are a bit further from the visible houses, because these trams come from Rua da Voz do Operário and make a slight right turn, while the Elevador da Graça came from Calçada da Graça and made a left turn.

Calçada dos Cavaleiros

Unknown cable car at the lower terminus of Elevador da Graça. An electric tram is passing by along Rua da Palma, which means the photo is taken between 1901 and 1913.

In 2024 this location is the northern end of Praça Martim Moniz. The only thing visible in this photo, that still exists today is the building in the background (windows in upper right corner of photo) which is located at the corner of Rua José António Serrano and Rua de São Lázaro.
